I have recently rebuilt a 34-PICT 3 for my bus with a S.B. Note: Dave found that NONE of the several top-to-body gaskets provided in the kit was the right size or configuration for his carburetor (he was possibly sent a kit for the earlier series carburettors). Aircooled.Net has them, and I think Gene Berg in the US has them too. The condenser is 1 237 330 251. Volume control screw O-ring (18)
So with a vacuum distributor, using a 55 idle, X130 or X132.5 main and about a 100 - 120Z air correction jet should provide good mixture for a 1776, without affecting fuel economy to badly (fuel consumption WILL be a little higher with the larger capacity though). Note the three black wires leading from the positive terminal on the coil -- one to the backup lights, one to the automatic choke, and one to the idle cut-off jet. You may have to get creative about how you attach so many wires to the single terminal on the coil. > Servicing Keihin carburettor>07.78 . For example, the X130 main jet is a tad rich for the vacuum dizzy at sea level, so if the car is to be operated at a high altitude it will be running very rich, and you might get a smoother engine and less exhaust soot with an X127.5 or even an X125 main jet (the "right" size for 5000 feet altitude). Now I have installed a newer Solex Brosol 30/31 carburetor (the Brazilian one), in good shape. If it has the small main jet, then you'll get better performance and easier tune-ups if you change it to a size X125 (for 1200/1300/1500cc engines) or a size X127.5 (for 1600cc engines) and change the idle jet to a size 55. Note: Regarding "drilling out" the main jet, please see our article on Tuning the 009 Distributor/
As these plates restrict air flow, there is less vacuum to . The
Main jet plug seal (15)
The higher atmospheric pressure outside of the throat - in this case inside the float bowl - pushes more fuel through the jets into the airstream. If you don't have a compressor, talk to Santa Claus! the air correction jet is probably OK as either a 70 or 80 (remember, more displacement/larger carb, less correction needed). The 34 PICT-3 was used on the Volkswagen "Beetle" from 1971 until 1974. First - Muir above was writing in the 1970s, before the USA changed their octane rating system, and also before Ethanol became common in fuels. A clean plug with a light grey/tan look means the mixture is about right. We have had great results with these factory bench tested carburetors. We provide the classic VW hobby with tech tips, project advice, and quality parts for VW Restoration, VW Performance and Custom Aircooled VW projects. Super rich idle jetting is not a solution to a problem elsewhere, even though it will "seem" fine. SOLEX 34 PICT 3 Carburetor Adjustment Procedures. The main jets also fit EMPI and Brosal Kadron 40/44EIS Carburetors. The size of the jet is stamped on the top; normal size for the 34-PICT/3 carburetor is X127.5 (1.275mm diameter hole). E10 usually needs a larger main jet and might also need a larger idle jet. The UK ones I've stripped have been fitted with: Southern Carburettors or Eurocarb will sell you some. NOT EVERYONE WANTS DUAL CARBS! Others might find that the 30 sized carburetor on a 1600cc engine works better with a larger X127.5 main jet. This will tell you if it's running rich or lean at speed and then you can set the air correction jet accordingly (smaller air correction means richer mixture - is delivers air so it works the opposite to a main jet. Rob responded - If you still have a vacuum distributor - yes. Do you know what size high speed jet you have? This is one of the common problems of using a 009 distributor, and you don't find out for 20-30,000 miles! The Solex main jet is also identical to the main jet used on some Mikuni motorbike carburettors so you might be able to get jets from larger motorbike shops too (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha), but the hole would probably need redrilling to suit the required fuel flow. Regarding fuel consumption as a function of jet size -- The 1600cc Beetle should get about 10-12km/l (24-28mpg). Once again, try the conservative approach first, then get richer only if you have to. Rob responded - Yes, that sounds like a rich mixture. This carburetor will NOT work well with cams with over 270 duration, (same as the stock 34-3 carb). It's actually much easier to do if you remove the top of the carburetor and the float. Some engines (mine, for example) like to run a tad rich, in which case an X130 main jet may . All three of these jets can be changed. All Solex carburetors tend to run lean at high power settings (high rpm and open throttle). The idle cut-off valve receives power from the positive (+) terminal on the coil (#15) -- see the schematic which shows this wiring arrangement. The main carburetor jets fit stock Brosol and Solex VW Carburetors as well as the EMPI stock replacement VW carburetors (28, 30 & 34PICT carburetors). Every engine is different, so strongly consider getting our micro sized idle jets to really dial it in. A
(See our Automatic Choke Discussion and Adjustment Procedure.). Location: Miami. We disassemble the carburetor, and bore the venturi to 28mm for more air! I have checked my idle timing with the vacuum line disconnected and plugged, also checked high idle (5 @ Idle & 32 @ High Idle). Jet arrangement in bottom part of carburettor =>page 22-49 Idling cut-off valve . There is also a 65 power jet there too) a X127.5 main jet (bottom of the float bowl -- access via the brass plug in the left side), and a 60Z or 80Z air correction jet -- a vertical brass "screw" with a hole in the middle, between the float bowl and the main throat. Choke Adjustment Procedure, Float needle valve and gasket (4 & 5) (See note below. You might want to drop a pilot jet size. and jet > size. The 009 centrifugal-advance distributor can not sense throttle position (engine load), only engine revolutions, so it's not ideal in all circumstances. We are now only fulfilling order requests only for items that we have in stock OR that we know can be acquired within a defined timeframe. (Solex jets are marked with the hole size in mm, so a X127.5 jet has a 1.275mm hole - I'm not sure what numbering method Mikuni use). Classified ads, photos, shows, links, forums, and technical information for the Volkswagen automobile If anything is changed in this combination for performance gains, 99% of the time at least the idle jet needs to be increased to add fuel. The stock carb has a 26mm venturi. Float needle valve and gasket (4 & 5) (See note below.) Contrast the Main Jet of the VW 105-1 for the '67 Beetle which would be120. I have a 52.5 idle jet in it, so it took about 4 1/2 turns to get max rpm ( thru a tach on my timing light). This will richen the mixture and help eliminate any 009 flat spots. Following that is a listing of the parts, giving
PLEASE NOTE: You are NOT CHARGED for out-of-stock items. But if you find a solid brass bolt, the main jet is further in the float chamber (later models) but still right in the back of it on the right-hand side. Solex 30 PICT-3, 34 PICT-3 and 34 PICT-4, remove the air bypass screw. While it is necessary to enrichen the fuel mixture when running an 009 distributor, you don't want the any richer than necessary since it will use more fuel. With a leaner 140Z air correction jet in the carburetor) I got 11.6 km/l (27.5mpg US). I've never had to do this so don't even know if it would work well. When you work out the area of the hole in each jet, the steps are roughly 2% increase in fuel flow for each size up (X125 to X127.5 for example). We have heard it said that the X130 (or X127.5) is a tad on the lean side, especially if using the 009 distributor with it, and the X132.5 gives a fractionally rich mix (which VWs have always liked better than lean). = Uses .0 Bypass: WEBER 34 ICT: Factory Sizes: Single Carb: Dual Carbs: AIR CORRECTION 1.60 N/A 1.60 EMULSION TUBE F-78 N/A MAIN . A sooty plug means the idle jet might be a little large. to start at sea level. **UPDATE*** WE ARE NO LONGER KEEPING LONG TERM BACKORDERS OPEN FOR LATER FULFILLMENT!! (Some of this material was adapted from John Connolly's article on How to Jet Your Carburetor.). The extra advance helps reduce the 009 flat spot just a little. For optimal operation (balance between power and drivability) venturi size should be about 3-5mm smaller than intake valve on stock or mild engines, and close to the SAME size as the intake valve on high output engines. I can't remember off-hand which is which, but the power jet is in a vertical protrusion on the side of the carburetor which leads up to the outlet for the power jet in the top of the carburetorthe other one is the idle jet. All products purchased should be inspected, measured, cleaned and properly assembled prior to installation. It's possible to develop partial blockage in one or more jets. Be sure to check your engine's fuel pressure and ignition system. I also adjust my accelerator pump after getting it to idle good. Email care allows us to provide important service detail that can be later referenced by both the customer and our care staff. We need to do some research regarding the adjustable main jet. This carb is designed to remain compatible with SVDA distributors, and fits the stock air filter. Dispatched today if paid within 1 hr 21 mins See details. I think the original idle jet was a 50, but the replacement jet orifices (orifii?) If the problem occurs at higher RPM (2500-4000), then you need to richen up your main jet. on a 1776. The 30 and H30/31 carburetors were designed primarily for the 1300-1600cc single port engines, but you can get slightly better performance with the larger carburetors on a 1200cc engine, but only if they are set to run properly with the smaller engine. There is a Mexican Solex 30 Pict-1 replacement Carburetor. Air correction jets are harder to find. With the air correction jet you have to go 3-4 sizes different to see a real difference, unlike the main jet where one size can make a big difference. The timing is set ATDC. 21.00 (Excl VAT) 25.20 (Incl . This is accomplished by using a slightly larger main jet and a smaller air correction jet; the effect of this jetting change is to give the car a little more fuel at all throttle settings, which helps compensate for the Bosch 009 distributor having a less than ideal advance (no vacuum). The three wires could each go up to fuse #12 individually, but that would be very inconvenient. Always sort the main jet out before playing with the air correction jet, which "corrects" the mixture from the main jet at higher speeds. Rob's note: When removing the main jet, I use a small glass jar (pickle or baby-food jar) to catch the fuel from the brass plug - I hardly spilled a drop (I just allowed the plug to fall in to the jar), and used the fuel to refill the float bowl later. Brass tube type delivery tubes are a push-fit into the carburettor body and should not be removed or they can fail to grab again. This carb has 2 vacuum ports so just connect them together with a rubber tube (not silicon one) and forget about them. The effect is not linear though, so as the airspeed increases, the main jet will start to deliver a richer mixture (too much fuel), so the air correction jet is needed to add air and stop the mixture going over-rich, then the air correction jet starts working too well at higher airflows (engine revs) so the Power Jet (Aux jet) is need to add more fuel again. There are three (or four) removable jets. This helped a lot. As we learn more, we will include it here. If it still seems hot, go to 127.5. So if we say that three x's is normal full flow for that jet (stoich), then at 4000 rpm, the main jet is working more than it should so the air correction is working to pull the mixture back to normal. Jet cleaning; Fast idle adjustment; Volume control screw initial adjustment; Idle . (Adapted from John Connolly's article on How to Jet Your Carburetor. You will find the Pilot Jet Valve in the same location as on the German 30 Pict-1 Carburetor. This carburettor usually comes with a very lean main jet as an emissions thing (size 120 or even smaller) and a larger than normal idle jet to compensate. Another - You mentioned a bigger jet -- are they available? The try the same test at a higher speed - a steady 55-60mph. Once all together, retune the carbs (mixture and idle speeds) as per standard VW tuning methods. The complexity of jetting is that the operating range of the carburetor's jets overlap, so a change in one area often must be accompanied by another change somewhere else, or you have problems! The air corrections I have are 125z, 170z and in the carburetor a 135z. such as, how do you know what mixture you are setting, and if you are running the car too lean and hot, or way too rich? Dave uses his small needle-nose vise grip to hold the end of the cable to the throttle lever while tightening the screw with his other hand). On the /3 and /4 carburetors - it looks like a bolt with a tiny silver plug in the center. Where the early style carburettor has the idle cut-off solenoid on the RIGHT side of the carburettor, that solenoid sits in the back of the idle jet. Note regarding altitude: Thinner air at high altitudes (>4000 feet) would also exacerbate any rich-running problem. Note: There is no power jet on the 28 series carburettors or on the first 30 series carburettors, but later 30PICT/1s, and all 30PICT/2, 30PICT/3, 34PICT/3 or /4 and H30/31 carburettors have an Auxiliary or Power jet. Rob's note regarding modern fuels: There are two major issues with modern fuels. Solex Carb Spacer for Alternator, 30 PICT Carburetors, 00-3245- It provides fuel at low medium revs too, so if it's not working you'll get a rough idle and lean mix at lower revs. The optimal stiochiometric (balanced) ratio is 14.5:1 -- that is, 14.5 parts air to one part fuel. The speed of the engine (RPM) when it's doing this tells you which jet you need to change. With the richer 125Z air correction jet I got 11.8 km/l (27.9mpg) -- no real difference. If you live at altitudes above 5000 feet, you also have to consider that, as high altitude results in the engine running rich (less oxygen in the air but the same fuel flow through the carburetor). The power jet counters the leaner condition at higher rpms, richening the mixture back into balance again. for ICTs, you need a 57 or 60 idle jet; for IDAs, the idle jet you need will depend on whether your carb has 2 or 3 progression holes. If it is any lower the choke may be staying on too long, or it may be stuck on and won't open at all. You'd think the jet sizes would follow the capacity more closely, but they don't. That's how I got mine! A 44 IDF would need a 55 idle jet, and a 48 IDF would need a 60 idle jet. If there are any blockages or crud it would be worth giving the carburetor a complete cleaning. Normally, for stock daily-driver Bugs, you will find that an idle jet size of 55-60 is right for you. So, I let it warm up, and set the timing to 32 degrees full advance. The air correction jet must be SMALLER to enrichen the mixture. Check the jets in the carburettor - if you have a vacuum distributor (you didn't say which sort you had), then the 34PICT/3 carburetor should have a 55 idle (right side of the carburetor. To explain, the main jet supplies the fuel, and it supplies too much as the rpms increase (a function of the increasing vacuum in the main venturi). Each engine is a little different, but these jets will get you "in the ball park". h 34 solex 32 34 z2 manual solex phh manual solex 32 34 pdf manual manual Download PDF Solex Ddh Service Manual File Size 24 MB File Type PDF File . The /4 version was used in California and had additional features to reduce emissions. All suggestions here are just that - suggestions. vegas It's designed to counter the effect of the air correction jet, which starts to lean the mixture TOO much with higher airflows. There also is an EMPI replacement 30 Pict-1 with the Pilot Jet . carburettor data 1124 cc models Venturi diameter 25 mm Main jet 127 5 Idle jet 48 Air correction jet 175 Emulsion tube EM Enrichment jet 50 . The air correction jet starts leaning the mixture to bring it back into balance, but as the rpms (airflow) rises to near the maximum for that carburettor, the air correction jet works too well, running the engine lean. See our Carburetor Overhaul Procedure. These plates provide restriction and also atomize the fuel/air mix better for greater fuel economy. [3] The Volume Control Screw is the smaller of the two adjusting screws. Ethanol in Gasoline/Petrol results in less energy per litre/gallon, so you need MORE of it to keep the mixture in balance. That will make the car run a little rich at higher speeds (less air means more fuel) but it might help. Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by low_light_craig, Jun 9, 2017. low_light_craig. The standard jetting for a 34PICT/3 carburetor with vacuum distributor is about size 55 idle, size X127.5 main, and size 100Z-120Z air correction jets. I'd avoid Chinese stuff on eBay. I don't think you'd honestly notice the difference. In most cases we are able to honor advertised price, but in the RARE case a substantial price increase occurs, you would be notified and given the option to cancel. Milease has increased by 90 miles per tank. They are cheap enough. For example, when used on a 1300cc engine with a vacuum distributor, the H30/31 should usually have a main jet of X122.5 and an air correction jet of about 140Z; but when used in a 1600cc single port engine, it should have a 125 main jet and a 125 or 130 air correction jet. It appears to replace the plug in the bottom of the 30 PICT/1 carburetor float bowl, which has the jet mounted inside and in line with that hole. body (5). Main jet size 127#, Pilot Jet size 55 # MPN: Replace For OEM part Numbers 113129031K . Main jet should be around the 130-135 area. Dave jetted his new carburetor as follows: main jet - X130; idle jet - 55; air correction jet - 80Z. You also set the accelerator pump for maximum stroke when using the 009. Sorry! Lightly lubricate the choke valve shaft and throttle valve shaft with engine oil and the external linkage with molybdenum grease. Also if you still can't get a slow idle loose the jet a little on the other side of carb were the bypass screw is. You can also get detonation (pinging/knocking) if the engine gets too hot. 55 idle, 127.5 main. VW set up a vacuum advance distributor, and the stock jetting in a 34 pict 3 for a 100% stock engine. I also have a stock carb rack but it appears to have water damage and one or more carb is seized. Items that are not expected to be restocked within 2 weeks WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED. If the idle cut-off valve fails in the shut position, the car will still run (roughly) on the main jets but will stall as soon as you take your foot off the throttle. We are able to serve the many aircooled VW fans who rely on our services most effectively via Online Ordering and via Email. Another question - The car runs terrible but it runs. Remove the brass plug with a hex head on the left of the carburetor -- bottom of the float bowl (all the fuel in the carburetor will rush out). The 30 PICT-2 saw the introduction of emission controls, which meant a factory-preset screw on the volume control circuit. What you are mainly looking for is the condition of the carburetor. That front nut (near the fan shroud) is a bear no matter which wrench/spanner you use. I have lowered the fuel pressure down to 2.5 psi and checked the float bowl fuel height. $7.99 . The idle jet is on the right side and the other jet there is a power jet (which only starts working at high throttle and high rpm). Air correction 75 to 125 and these are changed. all make a difference in how our old engines run, so you might need to experiment a little. SOLEX 34 PICT 3 Carburetor Adjustment Procedures. With lean jetting you are likely to need more throttle and have slightly worse fuel economy - using the slightly richer settings I'd suggested above will give you a little more power and a cooler running engine, so hopefully fuel economy will improve a little, but don't expect too much - fuel economy with the heavy Type 2 body is never very good. And the second issue is the presence of Ethanol (alcohol) in gasolines. Rebuild. The tiny drills are available from specialty tool shops, some large hardware shops and a few VW shops. nomenclature and part number (referring to the exploded view). 55 idle is fine. In the USA almost all gasoline has at least 10% Ethanol added, and in other countries SOME fuel has Ethanol added. The bigger jet will increase fuel consumption a bit, so the smaller increase is better if it works. Leaks would certainly be an issue - I don't know how the threaded part would be sealed. PRICES are subject to change without obligation. Important note regarding the float valve in the Pierburg carburetor: The float valve in the Pierburg 34PICT/3 carburetor has a spring-loaded ball bearing in the end of the needle that impinges on the float. The air correction jet affects mostly the high rpm -- not much effect on low-middle rpm). Please do NOT rely on PHOTOS while shopping as many of our products have selectable product options that may change the nature of the product being ordered compared to the representative photo. Most gasoline in the USA now has at least 10% Ethanol added (E10), and in other countries, SOME fuel grades have 10% ethanol added. Make sure this fits by entering your model number. The power jet is needed to correct a tendency for the air correction jet to work TOO well at max airflow - it leans the mixture off too much and the power jet corrects this. Try the X125 main before you try the X127.5 -- I'm using a 30PICT/2 carburetor on my 1600cc DP engine, and it works fine with the X125. Hey, use the stock jet size, which is 125 for the 34 PICT-3. Turn the Bypass Screw (the larger one) out a couple of turns, to get things started. Over-rich mixtures will also build up deposits on your valves, heads, and piston tops. "N" on the schematic is the coil. None of these tests are definitive - just indicative. These are setup for 12V electrics, and include the idle shut off valve. If not, I find that "canned air" (like Ultra Jet or similar) works pretty well. The idle jet is normally a little larger when used with the heavy bodied Type 2 and Karmann Ghias - in a Bug you usually use a 55, for a Type 2 or Karmann Ghia use a 60 or 65this gives you a little more power at low and medium speeds. Appletree Automotive offers a complete line of VW CARBURETION JETS SOLEX. Our site uses advanced code and encryption that is not supported by Microsoft's Internet Explorer Browser. AU $0.86 (approx 0.48)Australia Post International Standard. It should not need to be bigger than that with a vacuum distributor (009 distributors need richer mixtures). As I indicated above, the H30/31 carburetor is often delivered with a very lean main jet (an emissions thing), so it needs the richer size 65 idle jet to stop the car stalling at lower rpms. Size 24 MB File Type PDF File Get free Mikuni Solex Service Manual Solex . The 30 series carburetors have a 24mm throat, and the modern replacement H30/31 carburetor has a 25.5mm throat. Idle jet sizes of 70 or so will "run" on anything, but they don't run WELL (unless fouled plugs or 12mpg are your idea of "well"). Reply to Phatman. Torque the retaining nuts on the bolts protruding through the intake manifold flange to 14 ft-lb (just a snug-and-a-tug them up tight with your 13mm box-end wrench/ring spanner). Look down into the top of the carburetor to make sure that the screwdriver is squarely in the slot in the jet and that the threads line up squarely, then just screw it in (the small screw driver sits deep in the slot in the jet and helps line it up). When using the 30PICT or H30/31 carburetor on a twin port manifold and any vacuum distributor, change the jets to X125 or X127.5 main, 55 idle, and leave the air correction at 125Z. Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by low_light_craig, Jun 9, 2017. PRODUCT IMAGES are representative only. Brosol/Solex Idle Jets .40. Single 40/44/45mm carburetor, venturi range 28-32mm, Typical displacement of up to 1900cc. Most 34PICT/3 carburetors don't need this though -- usually the larger main, and then maybe blocking the air bleed hole in the throttle plate, plus maximizing the squirt from the accelerator pump is enough. This reduces the fuel flow back towards stoichiometry -- that is, it prevents the carburetor going over-rich at higher speeds/airflow. Use a steady throttle - minimum acceleration. It would be interesting to try using one an adjustable main jet, but there are some dangers too ? We serve the VW parts and VW Tech needs of owners of aircooled Type 1 VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 181 Thing, Type 2 Volkswagen Bus, Type 3 VW Squareback / Fastback / Squareback, and Type 411 & 412 Volkswagens. Orders are processed in the order that they are received and order fulfillment time varies. So if you get a "too small" jet it's easy to drill out with the right sized drill, but if you get a "too large" jet it's not so easy. The only method of getting it exact is to run the car on a dynomometer with an exhaust gas analyser in the exhaust pipe. The carburetor was a little "leaky" around the shafts. This will have the main jet supplying the fuel, and read the plug again. I'd go for a 130 main. Golf Mk1 > Volkswagen Workshop Manuals > Power unit > 34 PICT, Keihin carburettor and ignition system > Mixture preparation carb. You must do the opposite -- make the main jet a little bigger (X130 or X132.5) to stop the engine from hesitating when you accelerate. The valve on the Pierburg carburetor has a spring-loaded ball bearing on the end; it is likely that the valve in your kit does not. In these later models, you can easily change the jet with a medium screwdriver either with the top of the carburetor removed or with the carburetor completely off the car. Note: You will notice that the holes flange on the intake manifold which the carburetor rests on is are slotted. With the idle cut-off valve working correctly, hot spots in the cylinders don't occur as readily, since there is no fuel available to keep the engine running once you turn off the ignition. There is enough variation in fuel types, wear and tear on engine and carburetor, altitude and so on that you might need to experiment a little.
